Our story

Before we were known as PMH Borders, the charity’s roots were formed in a postnatal depression service funded by Crossreach back in 2001. After the funding was pulled for the existing charity in 2010, a dedicated group of supporters – therapists, practitioners and volunteers, guided by a Board of Trustees – came together to form a new service, known as PND Borders. In April 2024 we became PMH Borders and continue to offer the same services to help to the mothers, parents and families of the Scottish Borders who are affected by all aspects of perinatal mental health issues.

The services we offer

Having a baby brings many changes to your life and it is often overwhelming. We provide a neutral space for mothers, fathers and parents to have in-person 1-to-1 sessions with highly qualified and experienced therapists, where they can process their experiences and find ways to cope better with the emotional toll of being a parent.

Services below are all offered from our Galashiels premises.

Our team

Therapeutic Services Manager

Working closely with our Assistant Manager and therapy team, our Therapeutic Services Manager also provides Counselling, Art Psychotherapy and EMDR.

Assistant Manager

Our Assistant Manager has a background in Law and provides a seemingly impossible mix of warm friendliness and administrative efficiency to the running of the service! Essentially, we don’t know where we would be without her!

Counsellors / Psychotherapists

We currently have 4 permanent therapists in the team.

Creche Coordinator

Qualified and experienced, our creche co-ordinator provides a safe, nurturing space for your wee ones, supported by our bank of volunteers.

We currently have five volunteers and a student on placement from Borders College helping us in the Creche.

The Board of Trustees

As a registered charity, we at PMH Borders are governed by a Board of Trustees. We currently have 9 Trustee members who selflessly give of their time to oversee the organisation and help in the running, governance and development of the service.

Our Trustees come from a mixture of backgrounds including Business, Health, Education and Social Work. However, we welcome interest from anyone who may be looking for a position on our board and donating a little time to what can be a most interesting, worthwhile and fulfilling role.

Could you be a Trustee?

All of our PMH Borders team recognise the need for privacy and discretion and respect in all aspects of our service.

Volunteer with us

We would not be able to provide the level of service that we do if it weren’t for our volunteers.

Volunteers help us to run our creche service and meet the mandatory ratio according to the number of babies we have in each day. We call on them regularly and also on an ad hoc basis, when there is a shortage of staff.

All our volunteers are PVG/Disclosure Scotland checked.
